Today I didn’t have much time to play around but I wanted to take some time to settle on a colour palette. I think colour is one of the more difficult aspects of website design. It immediately sets the tone and feel for the website – it is amazing quite how quickly the wrong choice can make it look like a blog from 2005. Beyond aesthetics, colour choices can have a huge impact on the readability and accessibility of a website so it is definitely worth taking the time to get it right.

After some consideration, I decided on a more neutral palette. Like many people, I find pure white to be dazzling but I also think that an overly dark website can be limiting. I settled on an off-white to provide a softer base, dark charcoals to soften the black in turn, and a darker sage for accenting.

I like the result, it has a light feeling without being overly bright and provides plenty of contrast so is easy to read. It still requires a fair bit of tuning on where specific colours will be used and with which blocks. I’ll also need to consider fonts to complement the colours. For today though, I’m happy with the progress I managed to sneak in.
